If you have periods, these may become irregular or stop during treatment. Periods usually return to normal once treatment has finished. This also depends on what other cancer treatments you have, such as chemotherapy. If you have indigestion or pain in your tummy, let your nurse or doctor know.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Your child needs to be closely monitored while on steroid treatment, which may include checking their weight, blood pressure and urine. Your GP surgery, local hospital or local community nurses will usually run these check ups. If your child hasn’t had chicken pox, and is in direct contact with a child who has chicken pox, or develops it within 48 hours, contact the hospital immediately.

Talk to your doctor before taking other medicines

Steroids can help the symptoms of your relapse improve more quickly. However, taking steroids will not have any impact on your ultimate level of recovery from a relapse or the long-term course of your MS. We know that it is common to struggle with your mental health when you have cancer or care for someone with cancer.

If, however, you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should discuss it with your doctor before having a steroid injection. Let the doctor or nurse know so they can advise you what to do about your steroid therapy. If you need an operation, you may need to increase the dose of corticosteroids for a short time. This is because the body requires more steroids during physical stress (including if severe infections).

Side effects while treatment is being given

Your healthcare team is there to support you in making decisions that are right for you. They can help by discussing your situation with you and answering your questions. However, you should avoid ‘live’ vaccines when taking steroids. If you are considering vaccinations check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Steroids with Other Drugs

You should also avoid taking indigestion medicines for two hours before and two hours after taking gastro-release tablets. You might have liver changes that are usually mild and unlikely to cause symptoms. You have regular blood tests to check for any changes in the way your liver is working. A low level of potassium in the blood is called hypokalaemia.

Please ensure they are given plenty of notice to arrange any repeat prescriptions. If you run out of steroids you must inform your GP immediately as you should not stop taking your steroids suddenly. Your GP will have been sent a copy of your discharge summary, including the list of medication you were prescribed on discharge from hospital.

How do people take it?

But your sugar levels usually go back to normal shortly after you stop taking steroids. Some vaccines work by giving you a very small dose of a particular disease, so that you then become immune to it. You won’t be able to have injectable steroids buy a steroid injection close to the time you have certain vaccinations. Talk to your healthcare team about when you’ll be able to have a steroid injection if you’ve recently had a vaccination, or if you’re due to have one soon.

However, they should be avoided or used with caution if you have an ongoing infection or a blood clotting disorder (like haemophilia). Highly soluble steroid injections such as hydrocortisone, were commonly injected for joint and soft tissue conditions years ago. They are very fast acting but unfortunately not very long lasting.
